Work Permit (EAD)

What is a Work Permit (EAD)?

A Work Permit, officially known as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), is an authorization issued by USCIS that allows certain individuals to work legally in the United States for a specific period of time.

Important: An EAD does not grant permanent immigration status on its own; it only allows you to work while you maintain a valid immigration process or category (such as a pending asylum case or TPS).

The official card includes:

  • Cardholder’s name

  • Eligibility category

  • Expiration date

  • Authorization number

Who can apply for it?

Many immigration categories qualify. Each permit is issued under a specific code that determines the reason for eligibility.

Important Warnings

Not a Permanent Status

Having a work permit does not mean you have permanent immigration status or residency.

Employment Interruption

Renewing your work permit late can lead to immediate interruptions in employment, as your employer must suspend you once the card expires.

Unauthorized Employment

Working in the country without authorization may negatively affect any future immigration process.

Maintain Your Immigration Status

Some categories strictly require maintaining your original immigration status for the EAD to remain valid.
