Educational information on how to renew permanent residence, work permits, and travel documents.

Immigration Document Renewals

What is Document Renewal?

It is the process through which an individual updates or replaces an official document issued by USCIS when it is about to expire, has expired, is lost, or damaged. Please note that this service is not for applying for citizenship, as that is a separate process.

Who needs to renew their documents?

Permanent Residents

Cuando su Green Card vence (generalmente cada 10 años) o cuando el documento está dañado o perdido.

Conditional Residents

Due to recent marriage or investment. They must remove conditions before expiration (this is not a simple renewal).

Individuals with Work Permits

They must renew their EAD before it expires to avoid interruptions in employment.

Individuals with Travel Permits

They must renew it if they plan to travel outside the country again (Advance Parole).

Important Warnings: Read Before Renewing

El peligro de renovar con antecedentes

Before renewing any document, evaluate whether you have had any legal issues (arrests, fines, or court cases). Renewing a document with an unresolved criminal record may alert immigration authorities and could trigger a deportation process. If you have any legal history, consult with an attorney first to review your record before submitting any documents to USCIS.

Abandonment of Residency (6-Month Rule)

A permanent resident should not remain outside the United States for more than six consecutive months. If they stay abroad for an extended period, they may risk losing their residency in the future due to “abandonment.”

Conditional Residents

They must remove the conditions on their residence before the expiration date. If they do not, they may automatically lose their immigration status.

Expired Green Cards & Employment Interruptions

Renewing an expired Green Card does not automatically affect your status, but it may impact your employment or ability to travel. Additionally, renewing a work permit (EAD) late can lead to immediate interruptions in employment.
